Description

Al-Basit
The Reliever

Have We not opened up thy heart,
and lifted from thee the burden that had weighed so heavily on thy back?
And have We not raised thee high in dignity?
And, behold, with every hardship comes ease:
verily, with every hardship comes ease!
Hence, when thou art freed from distress,
remain steadfast, and unto thy Sustainer turn with love.
Ash-Sharh 94, tr. Asad
Sometimes, in order to help, He makes us miserable;
but heartache for His sake brings happiness.
Laughter will come after tears.
Whoever foresees this is a servant blessed by Allah.
Wherever water flows, life flourishes:
wherever tears fall, Divine mercy is shown.
Rumi, Mathnawi I:817-820, tr. Helminski

AL-BASIT
The Expander

From the root basata: to expand, enlarge; to unfold to spread out; to make wide and ample. Al-Basit is expressed in the Qur'an in its verbal form (13:14).

Allah is the source of ease, flow, growth and expansion. All creation enjoys and favours this state. Allah is the Creator horizons beyond human conception and imagination. Often outer and material constrictions can be the key to open insights and doors of inner knowledge, expansion and deeper contentment.

Call upon Al-Basit at times of restriction and constriction, and visualise His limitless and infinite mercy and horizons. Contemplate the need for expansion and restriction and the balance of life's experience between them.
